These include Bitly, Rebrandly, Tinycc, and a whole host of others. Using one of these websites to shorten your website links is an okay way to get started. But I never liked using one of the services. A couple of years ago, I discovered a better way to create your own personal branded URL shortening service. Why Custom URL Shortening? One of the primary benefits of using a custom URL shortening service is that you can brand your organization. Having my own custom shortener appealed to me. You may have seen some of these custom short links in my articles and social posts. I use them extensively. I have created two custom link-shortening domains for branding purposes. Any link within the printed book uses this domain. The benefit is if the actual link changes, all I need to do is edit the destination URL. 1. Find a short domain relevant to your agency to set up short and simple redirects. Keep the domain under ten characters, if possible. 2. Note I used both .com and .me domains.
That lets people know where they will go if they click; they can hover over the link with their mouse to see the full URL. It is also a recommended best practice for accessibility, because it provides people who use screen readers with clear, complete information. Example: Visit Safe Computing for information about IT security and privacy at U-M. Don't use a shortened URL if people must log in. If you are directing people to a page that requires login, let them see the full URL and tell them login will be required. Be clear about the destination when you must use short URLs. On social media platforms, such as Twitter, you may need to use a shortened URL to stay within a character limit. It is helpful to let people know where the short URL will take them. Example: Learn how to protect yourself from tax fraud at U-M Safe Computing. Direct people to phishing websites-sites that ask you to log in or fill in a form and then steal your password and/or personal information. Always Look Before You Log In. Initiate download of malicious software, such as ransomware, to your device.

Facebook rejected an ad that targeted both tobacco and marijuana users through pictures. Therefore that ad made no impressions. We incurred a charge every time a user clicked on one of our ads. On a daily basis, we could specify a spending limit for each ad and for the entire campaign. We, like other advertisers, could then specify the maximum amount we would be willing to pay for an ad (a “bid”). Then auctions determined the likelihood a given ad would be shown on pages of the target audience. For a given ad, Facebook suggests a “bid range” based on how much other advertisers would be willing to pay to reach the same target audience. This range can change over time based on both the ad space (other ads in the pool of ads) or an ad’s performance. Our bids fluctuated over time in line with the bid range for a given ad. Facebook reports statistics on bids, impressions, clicks, and dollars spent on all ads in a campaign. Impressions are defined as a single time an ad is shown to a user, regardless of whether the user clicks on the ad.
