You'll no longer have to devote half of your tweet to a URL; using a shortened URL leaves you with 120 characters left to dedicate to your message. Once you have your long URL shortened, you'll need to keep in mind that you're trying to get retweets. In order to allow other users to retweet your message without having to edit or fuss over it you will need to leave enough space in your original message for the retweet code. That means other Tweeters need enough space to add RT @YourNameHere. So, if you want to encourage retweeting, make sure there are enough character spaces left in your original message. And, if you haven't yet created your Twitter account, keep retweeting in mind when you register at the site and make your username as short as you can. So now where does that leave us? You are dedicating about 36 characters to the shortened URL and retweet space (depending on how long your username is). You still have a little over 100 characters to get your message across.
You also can't change the link later. Another challenge with some of the popular link shorteners is that because spammers have used them to hide URLs they're sending out, they can cause an email to be flagged as spam. Don't use them in your newsletters or autoresponders. However, they work well when you need a super short link for the social networks. If you're using WordPress, the plugin GoCodes is a simple way to shorten links and stay in control of them. It also gives you the ability to edit the link that a shortened link points to. You can install it the same as any other plugin. Go to "Plugins" then search for "GoCodes" then install and activate. This works especially well for affiliate marketers. If I recommend Big Website Host A right now, I can make a short link to my recommended host. If next week, I realize there's something better and decide to recommend Big Website Host B, I can change the link my short link points to and redirect people to the new recommendation. All my short links will still work but they'll point to Big Website Host B instead. A similar option if you're not using WordPress is the free script Shorty. It creates short links on your own URL. There are other options out there as well so just search for free URL shortener scripts and compare your choices. Using your own domain as the base for your shortened links allows you to continue building links to your own website, and building your brand. It also makes the link less likely to cause your newsletter or autoresponder to get flagged as spam.
